Everybody knows the amazing country called Brazil and the amazing kiting conditions that the country offers. Having the best freestyle spots in the world it attracts a lot of kitesurfers all over the world to train and escape wintertime back home.
Felix Maks, a good friend who organised a downwinder from Cumbuco to Atins, approached me several times to join him and experience an entire new brazil as what I am used to. After booking a flight we discussed what the plan would be. Normally the downwinders always end in Jerricoacoara, but this time we planned to extend the trip with another 350km up north. This means that we would cover 700km of beach by kite. Every year I visit Brazil to train for the upcoming season, but I’ve never done a downwinder up north, so this would be something unforgettable.
Normally the wind is quite dense, so you’ll be able to ride your bigger sizes when you stay around the area of Cumbuco. Going more up north you’ll be able to rig up your 7m, get some proper jumps done and break your WOO record.
The first part from Cumbuco to Paracuru is quite known, as we often do a downwinder from Cumbuco to Cauipe, the lagoon where we always train. Cumbuco is the most known place around this area, called Ceara. So the first day we already noticed that we left the crowds behind us. Having fun in the waves makes you forgot how many km we already covered the first day. We ended the first day with a bbq at a pousada in Paracuru. The pousada owner prepared the amazing and well-known picanha meat with some caipirinha’s on the side.
Jerricoacoara is a smaller village half way the downwinder. In Jerri are no roads, everyone drives in their pick-ups or buggy’s through the sand. During evening time everyone gets on the dune and watch the sunset.
We were about to finish our downwinder for that day and started to pass the big dune of Jerri. Sunset in front of me, the famous dune behind me filled with people who are watching the sunset and you are in between. No words can describe how that feels.
Finishing the day in the main road with some chicken sticks from the local grill and caipirinha’s at the stands.
The second half of our downwinder would be a bit more challenging. Because not many people have covered this part of Brazil and the ones who did were warning us for the Parnaiba delta, big rivers with strong currents and really REALLY remote beaches.
Everything was going well and easy, having fun in Barra Grande with an amazing full-moon party on the beach, great nature and remote places. We noticed that the beaches were getting emptier and more remote. Barra Grande offers you an amazing freestyle spot just downwind of the village. The wind is stronger compared to Cumbuco, but in the morning it is good for your 9m and slowly starts picking up. Ending your day with your 7m and boosting some big jumps.
Now we only had to face 1 more big obstacle and then we would arrive safely in Atins, the Parnaiba delta. Many people warned us that it is dangerous and almost impossible to cross the delta. It is a delta with many little rivers and loads of current. But the most challenging part is that it is a delta, which means that there’s no possibility for a jeep to assist us and a boat to assist was no option either. Crossing the first river got followed up by old tree logs that were standing straight up in the sand and in the ocean, so we had to make sure we were enough upwind to not be hit. Kiting for 6 hours straight without seeing anyone or anything made me feel alive and the adrenaline started to flow to make sure nothing would happen with us. We had fun on the water, but still we knew that if anything would happen we would sleep a night or more at the beach and have to walk a marathon in deep sand haha..
Completely destroyed and tired we arrived in Atins where the drivers of the Jeeps already made a campfire and started to grill the fresh fish that they bought along the way. Eating the fish and thinking back of what we did, what happend and what could have happend, we were making jokes and having fun till late in the night.
An amazing experience!!
