I had the great opportunity to attend the 2017 Hydrofoil Pro Tour stop in Mauritius, from September 18th to the 22nd 2017. We were 35 registered riders from all over the world and we had a good 4 days of racing in the beautiful lagoon of Pointe d’Esny on the south-east coast of Mauritius Island. The racing took place in a breath-taking scenery .
The lagoon was quite shallow in some areas so our racing course was quite short (2 laps in 8 minutes for the fastest guys), but the currents and wind-shifts made the tactical game interesting even on such a short course.
Nicolas Parlier did a demonstration of his speed and tactical supremacy during this event (like on most kite-foiling events this year) by winning 14 of the 18 races. Behind him, Guy Bridge and then his older brother Olly Bridge completed the podium. In the female division, Daniela Moroz did not give any chance to her closest rival Steph Bridge.
On my side, I had a good start of the race as I was 12th at the end of the first day, but I was unfortunately not able to keep that ranking after… The last international race I did was long ago and it is hard to come back into the game.
The fast guys were definitely too fast for me, but I was hoping to stay in the first half of the fleet. At the end of the race, I finished 21st out of 35, which is not too bad, but I am sure I could have done better.
The last day of racing was the windiest day, but I made a mistake by riding my 9m AERO UL as I was too underpowered (most of the fleet was on 11m or 13m): I should have been riding my 14m AERO UL overpowered instead (I did not have the 11m in my quiver).
I was very happy with my AEROs (Quiver: 9m, 14m and 20m Peter Lynn Aero UL, and Spotz Shark hydrofoil) but regretted that I did not ride more with my 20m before the event as it took me a little while to get used to it on the third day of the competition.
This event was absolutely awesome! Great weather, great crew of riders, and a great team of organizers and volunteers, it is definitely a must do competition for any kitefoil-racing enthusiast! Put it down in your next year’s calendar I will definitely try to go there again! And next years, I hope I will do perform better.
